The best Christmas gifts are the ones nobody else could have given. A photo mosaic takes the photos you already have — holidays, birthdays, first days of school, the dog — and rebuilds a favourite picture from hundreds of them. From across the room it is one portrait; up close, every tile is a memory.

Gift ideas for everyone on your list

For parents and grandparents: a portrait of the whole family built from decades of photos — scan a few old prints and mix them in. For a partner: your favourite photo of the two of you, made from every trip and every ordinary Sunday. For a best friend: a picture of you both, built from the photos only the two of you would recognise. For a pet lover: their dog or cat, made of a thousand photos of the same dog or cat.

Collect photos from the whole family

The photos are usually scattered across everyone's phones. Send one link to the family chat and everybody adds theirs, no app and no account needed — see the group photo mosaic guide. Keep it a surprise by sending the link to everyone except the person it's for.

Or write it in words

A portrait made of words is a lovely alternative: names, inside jokes, places you've been, the song you always sing in the car. Each word download includes a 10K image, a print-ready PDF and an SVG, so it stays sharp at any print size.

Ready in minutes, even last minute

There is nothing to ship: the file arrives as soon as you download it, so it works as a last-minute gift too. Print it at a local photo shop or online print service — photo mosaics export up to 20,000 pixels wide, enough for a large framed poster or canvas — and each download comes with a short animated video of the picture assembling, perfect to send on Christmas morning.

Start in the photo mosaic maker: pick the main photo, add your photos as tiles, and adjust the look while the preview updates live. Shopping for another occasion? See more personalised photo gift ideas.

Common questions

How long does it take to make?

Most people have a mosaic they love within 15–30 minutes: a few minutes to pick the photos, the rest to try layouts and settings. The download itself takes about a minute.

Can I still give it if Christmas is tomorrow?

Yes. The full-resolution file is ready the moment you download it. Print it the same day, or send the file and the animated reveal video as a digital gift.

How many photos do I need?

Around 100 tile photos is enough for a good result, and 300–500 is ideal. Fewer still works — the mosaic simply repeats them more often.

What size should I print it?

As large as the wall allows. 50 × 70 cm is a good minimum; at larger sizes people can walk up and find themselves in the tiles.

Is it free?

Creating and previewing are free with a free account. You only pay when you download the full-resolution file.
