The gifts people keep are the personal ones. A photo mosaic turns the photos already on your phone into one picture of the person you love: from across the room it is their portrait, up close every tile is a moment you lived together. It works for almost any occasion, and it costs nothing to try.

Gift ideas by occasion

Birthdays — especially the big ones: their whole life in one portrait, with old prints scanned in among this year's photos. Anniversaries: your favourite photo of the two of you, made from every year you've had. Weddings: the couple's portrait built from photos sent in by every guest. A new baby: the first year in one picture for the nursery wall. Retirements and farewells: a team photo made from years of work trips and office birthdays. Memorials: a portrait made of the photographs they left. And for the holidays, see our Christmas photo gift ideas.

Gift ideas by person

For mum and dad, or grandparents: the family portrait, made from decades of family albums. For a partner: the photo you both love, rebuilt from every trip and every ordinary Sunday. For a best friend: a picture of the two of you made from photos only you would recognise. For a pet lover: their dog or cat made of a thousand photos of that same dog or cat.

Three ways to make it

A photo mosaic rebuilds the picture from hundreds of your own photos — start in the photo mosaic maker. A portrait made of words spells it out in names, places, dates and inside jokes, and downloads as a 10K image plus a print-ready PDF and SVG. A stone mosaic turns a single photo into cut stone, like an ancient Roman floor.

From idea to wall in an evening

Everything happens in the browser or the iPhone and Android apps, and the preview updates live as you adjust it. The download is instant, so there's nothing to wait for: print it at a local photo shop or an online print service — photo mosaics export up to 20,000 pixels wide, enough for a large framed poster or canvas — and send the short animated video of the picture assembling as a teaser.

Look closer

Every tile is a real photograph. Zoom into a finished piece — or watch one come together.

A finished mosaic is a real piece of art — for the living room, as a gift, or printed big enough to fill a wall.

Common questions

What is a good personalised gift for someone who has everything?

Something made from your shared memories. A photo mosaic can't be bought anywhere else, because it's built from your own photos of the two of you.

How many photos do I need?

Around 100 tile photos is enough for a good result, and 300–500 is ideal. For word art you only need one photo and a list of words.

How long does it take?

Usually 15–30 minutes from picking the photos to downloading the file, and the download itself takes about a minute.

What size should I print it?

As large as the wall allows. 50 × 70 cm is a good minimum; larger prints let people walk up and find themselves in the tiles.

Is it free?

Creating and previewing are free with a free account. You only pay when you download the full-resolution file.
